Lil' Seester

So I just read a post on The Pioneer Woman website (I can't get enough of her recipes) that talked about her sister and the special bond that sisters have. It got me to thinking about my sister, Rachel.

You see, Rachel is pregnant and due to have her first child and the first grandchild of the family on or around November 13th.

Rachel is about 2 years younger than me. We grew up in the country (along with my younger brother, Kellen) so we were left with only each other to play with. And let me tell you, my siblings made great playmates. We played house, Barbies (even Kellen, who always wanted the red-headed Barbie), we put on plays, created haunted houses in the barn, went exploring down at the creek, and did weird stuff like spin around and around in the living room until we were too dizzy to walk.

This portrait of our childhood may have you picturing us skipping into the sunset holding hands. Oh, no. We fought constantly. We used to pull Rachel's hair incessantly, and she jumped on me once nearly breaking my collar bone (my poor mother!)

Once I got to junior high and then high school, I did my own thing. We shared friends, but still fought all the time. And then something happened....we grew up. Suddenly, my sister was cool and so much fun to be around. We would get dressed up and go out together, go to the movies together, or just sit around an watch Lifetime movies (all day long!) She has seen me through some of the toughest times of my life, with a kindness and honesty that only a sister could show.

Rachel and I lived together one last time for about a year and a half when I moved back to Manhattan to go to school. While we still had a few fights, I feel like we became closer than ever, and when she moved to Kansas City, it broke my heart.

In the last few years, Rachel has seen a lot of change in her life. She got married and moved back to Manhattan (while I'm thrilled about this, she kind of misses her big city life). And, as I mentioned, probably the biggest change of all, she is going to have a baby.

I can't even begin to express the kind of happiness this brings to me. Not only to have a beautiful new niece, but to get to see my sister (one of the smartest, funniest, most gorgeous women I know) become a mother. It's not going to be easy, especially when her husband is sent back to Afghanistan next year, but if anyone can do it, she can. Through all the changes in her life, I have seen a strength in her I couldn't have imagined.

Those of you who have a sister (or a brother) and share the kind of bond I share with Rachel, understand that there is nothing in the world like it. It is a bond that will carry us through the rest of our lives.

I'm so proud of you sissy!

PS I love you too Kelbell!

Proposals...

www.nbc.com

One of my favorite shows is The Office. I admit that over the past few seasons it has lost a little of the spark it had in the first 4 seasons or so. But, even dwindling, it is still one of the best shows on television.

In every episode we see boss, Michael Scott, act like and ass or screw something up, always while making us laugh. He is a lovable screwball and finally found his match in fellow lovable screwball, Holly Flax.

Well, in last night's episode Michael finally proposes to Holly...and I cried! I haven't cried like that over a sitcom proposal since Chandler proposed to Monica on Friends and, while not a proposal, when Big went to Paris and professed his love to Carrie in the series finale of Sex and the City.

Yes, I know, I shouldn't get all weepy over a television show and the lives of people who are not real, and maybe, just maybe, I should get a life.

But hey, I can't help it. It makes me happy to see people find their true love...even if its interrupted by commercial breaks.

Ma Petite Belle

This little sweet pea is Ike's dog Belle. She makes me incredibly happy. I've know very few dogs as smart or as spry as this sweet gal. She is nearly 10 years old, but gets around like a young pup. She loves hiking trails, riding in Ike's pickup (watching for deer and cows), playing with her friend Maizie and she really loves eating Snaps!

I hope she's having fun in Florida and I can't wait to see her (and Ike) soon!

Butterscotch Pecan Chocolate Chip Cookies

So my man is away for a month in Florida...I can't go out and drink my heartache away because Aggieville has its stupid Fake Patty's Day drunk fest today (I already worked during it, you can't pay me enough to go back down there!)...so instead I bake. And what did I bake you ask? Butterscotch Pecan Chocolate Chip Cookies (I still have a while to go before swimming suit season, right?!)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Combine 3/4 cup brown sugar, 3/4 cup granulated sugar, 1 cup butter softened, and 1 teaspoon vanilla and beat until creamy.

Add 2 eggs and beat.

Add 2 1/4 cups flour, 1 teaspoon kosher salt, 1 teaspoon baking soda and mix well.

Stir in 1/2 bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips and 1/2 bag of butterscotch chips.

Stir in 1 cup chopped pecans.

Drop mixture by rounded teaspoons onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 8-10 minutes.

It says it should make 100 2-inch cookies, but I eat so much cookie dough while I'm baking, it ends up being way less!!

Well, I still miss ol' Ike, but baking (eating!) the cookies has helped....maybe it's because I'm over at his place (far, far away from Aggieville!!!).

Either way, let the countdown begin.....18 days (253 cookies) until I see him!!!

Girls, Girls, Girls

Nothing replenishes the soul like a girls' night: good food, good friends....and of course good wine.

My group of girlfriends and I have gone through a huge year of transitions: new babies, new engagements, new loves, new endeavors and new newlyweds. These roads we have all taken have lead us to such wonderful places, but these roads have also kept us very busy. We finally made it a point to get together and just enjoy each others company.

I feel strengthened just by having a few hours with my best gals (although we did miss having Erin and Denali there with us)! They are so positive and encouraging, I really don't know how I would get through my life without them. Each is so unique and beautiful; they just amaze me! I hope each of them knows how important they are to me!

I also want to let a few of my long distance gal pals (Maggie, Andrea and Kyleigh) know how much they inspire me every day. Even though they aren't here to join in our girls' nights, they are in my heart every day!

Let the women in your life know how happy they make you.....

Little Surprises

I heard a knock on my door yesterday and opened it to find my love with a bouquet of flowers. Need I say more?!
