Two Poems

An Ode to Swingin'
You can find me these days
On a hammock that sways
On the front porch of the Colorado House.

In orange, blue and yellow
It has the colors that will mellow
Even the most sourpuss of souls.

Just talkin' 'bout the weather
We're like birds of a feather
Sippin' beer from a mason jar.

Belle is prowlin' round
Except for the birds there's not a sound
Other than an engine roarin' right across the street

You can find me these days
On a hammock that sways
On the front porch of the Colorado House.

McDowell Creek Boys
Head on up McDowell Creek and you might hear,
some guys playin' music that could make you shed a tear.

Earl on his guitar and Ray on mandolin,
Dennis grab your bongo, we all join in.

Stan in the corner pickin' on his bass,
Everyone in earshot has a smile on their face.

We can hear Dave's voice float across the creek,
As somebody whispers, "Hey, there's a party this week."

Their eyes light up, and they just know,
they MUST play this party at Lake Elbo.

So head on up Lake Elbo and you might hear
some guys playin' music that'll make you shake your rear.

Blueberries, Blueberries

I saw a pint of blueberries in our fridge this morning and have since had this beautiful poem by my dear friend, Andrea, and her husband, Bob, stuck in my head (or at least the first line):

"blueberries, blueberries, pickin' blueberries
up in the mountains where the land feels airy.
blueberries, blueberries, pick 'em all day
brought me a friend so I won't mind the stay.
under the pine and the oak in the sun
that's where you'll find the sweet, juicy ones.
blueberries, blueberries, in the summertime
pickin' where I go to clear my mind."

So with Andrea and Bob (and their sweet new addition Orien) on my mind, I decided to make this scrumptious blueberry pie!

Here is the link to the pie crust recipe I use. And here is the link to the full blueberry pie recipe courtesy of The Pioneer Woman (I use her recipes constantly and have yet to be disappointed!!)

Here are my lovely blueberries coated in sugar, nutmeg and flour.

The pie crust is ready to go.

I decided to use a lattice top crust instead of completely covering the top with another full crust.

And here is how it turned out! De-li-ci-ous!!!

Happy Baking! Enjoy the summertime!

Happy Haiku

Here is another activity from The Happy Book:

The beauty of haiku comes from being economical with your words (a recession friendly poem!)-you're forced to describe things as simply as possible (first line: five syllables, second line: seven syllables, third line: five syllables), and in the process, you find new ways of thinking and describing. Write a series of haikus about your favorite things.

Here are a few of my haikus:

It takes just one click
To capture simple beauty
And share it with all.

You read the first word
Immediately taken
To a world beyond

One half teaspoon here
Now a whole cup is added
Everything changes

Dipping under trees
While following the river
Tripping over logs

New notes meet your ears
A melody ripples through
Words that spin your head
